More about our camp:

YMCA Camp Nowashe offers your child a place to be unplugged this summer. Discover nature, make friends and new skills.

The YMCA of Greater Hartford has made a conscious decision to continue to work towards the elimination of the achievement gap in education and providing opportunities to close the opportunity gap for low income youth and teens. The YMCA believes that investing in the foundations of young people in our community helps to build lifelong success.

Camp Nowashe serves an ethnically diverse and majority-minority community of campers that represents many different cultures. We also get campers from all over Connecticut; we have campers that live in the city as well ones who live in suburban or rural communities. Camp Nowashe is not just a camp for East Hartford residents—we accept all, regardless of socioeconomic status, and encourage and maintain a diverse and inclusive camp experience. Families applying for financial assistance must submit income verification paperwork. We currently do not identify educational levels; however, we do allow students that attend summer school to participate in a half-day program at a reduced rate.

The East Hartford YMCA’s Camp Nowashe is one of the YMCA of Greater Hartford’s summer day camp programs that fosters positive youth development while simultaneously addressing the achievement gap and summer learning loss. This is attained by using a Project-Based Learning Model to offer age-appropriate activities in literacy, STEM, social studies, physical activities and social-emotional growth to each camper each session. The campers at Camp Nowashe will experience a wide-range of structured and non-structured activities that are developed by the counselors and directors. Each day, the campers begin with a traditional camp opening, and the day is spent rotating between activity stations including field games, daily swimming (free play and lessons), drama, arts and crafts, sports, and creative play. Children 9 years and older will have the opportunity to take a field trip outside of camp weekly. Each week will have a special theme and will include a variety of special events and activities. The East Hartford YMCA has collaborated with the East Hartford Board of Education to offer summer day camp at a variety of school locations in East Hartford over the years of its existence.

YMCA Camp Nowashe is Summer School Compatible.
