More about our camp:
Capital Community College’s Summer Computer Science Program is a two-week summer program designed for middle school students aged 12–15. The program provides a stimulating, active, and fun learning environment for students to learn and apply computer science principles through hands-on activities in computer programming, web page design, and digital electronics. Students work independently and in teams on a range of technical projects designed to build their computational thinking skills. Students also participate in youth development activities to develop problem-solving, team-working, collaboration and presentation skills.
Our Summer Computer Science Program is designed to engage students and spark their desire to continue taking computer science coursework in high school and ultimately college. Our program is specifically designed to address the problem that there are too few students studying computer science in high school and later in college to fill the current and projected jobs in this field. Further, within CT and across the U.S., there are glaring disparities in terms of which communities have access to computer science education. In CT specifically, female and Black/Latino students are under-represented in computer science coursework in grades 6-12.
Capital’s summer program targets Hartford and East Hartford youth who traditionally do not have access to this type of summer activity. While summer computer science camps are offered at colleges and universities across the United States, the costs – as much as $800/week – can be prohibitive for low-income families. Capital’s goal has always been to provide this same quality programming at free or reduced cost to Hartford and East Hartford families.
As a Tutorial program, our Summer Computer Science Program offers academic enrichment for participating students. Our program also supports and aligns with numerous State of CT Content Standards.
